The Busy Derm PA Mommy Chronicles - Part Two

Written by Lisa Weiss, MMSc, PA-C | March 14, 2025
Life as a Physician Assistant and a busy mom is no small feat. Balancing patient care, endless forms, meal planning, school pick-ups, and probably some late-night science projects (with glitter) can be overwhelming. It’s easy to let stress pile up faster than the laundry, but there’s good news—you can reclaim your sanity without adding to your to-do list. The key is small, manageable habits that make a big difference. Let’s dive into some practical ways to bring balance and calm into your whirlwind days.

First, embrace the magical power of saying “no.” You don’t have to be everything to everyone all the time. That PTA meeting? Politely decline. Another shift because a coworker bailed? Respectfully pass. Guard your time like it is your most valuable resource—because it is! Saying “no” to unnecessary obligations creates space for what truly matters: your family, your health, and a moment to breathe. Remember, even superheroes take a day off (probably).

Next, sprinkle self-care throughout your day—it doesn’t need to be fancy, but it should be consistent. Take five minutes in the morning to sip coffee in silence (yes, silence), sneak in a quick stretch between patients, or blast your favorite song on the drive home. My New Year’s resolution was to add five minutes of daily meditation to my life and it has helped tremendously - try it out! These micro-moments of joy can recharge you more than you realize. Bonus points if you involve your kids in stress-busting activities like a dance-off in the kitchen or a family walk after dinner. Movement, laughter, and connection? That’s the trifecta for stress relief.

Finally, remember that asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness. Delegate what you can—whether it is ordering groceries online, hiring a cleaning service (if budget allows), or having your partner handle bedtime routines while you unwind. Letting go of perfection is liberating. The world won’t end if the laundry isn’t folded Marie Kondo-style. What truly matters is that you’re showing up for yourself and your loved ones with energy and presence. So, breathe deeply, let go of the small stuff, and give yourself credit for all you do. You’re not just surviving—you’re thriving, and that’s pretty amazing!
