The Role of the Microbiome in Acne and Rosacea
- In:
Clinical Practice
- Milk protein consumption (predominately whey protein) leads to worsened acne. Pea protein does not have the same effect.
- Doxycycline use, even low dose, can alter the gut microbiome for up to 6 months. Other antibiotics may alter the gut microbiome for up to 2 years.
- Acne patients are typically deficient in short chain fatty acids. Spore based probiotics known to produce acetate (a short chain fatty acid) can be an important adjunct in acne management.
